Guam - You can't put just anyone in a classroom and expect them to teach. According to University of Guam assistant professor Dr. Michelle Santos, the Department of Education has a grant to support the recruitment and retention of highly qualified teachers (HQTs). She adds that those with bachelor degrees can work toward teacher certification through UOG.

"We have a gentleman right now who has a civil engineering degree and he'd like to become a math teacher he can do that by taking these classes and taking the state exam, with PRAXIS, the math exam and he will be a highly qualified teacher for Guam by completing this education program."

HQTs are fully certified, licensed by the state, hold a bachelor's degree from a four-year institution, and demonstrate competence in their core academic subject area. For more information on HQTs, e-mail [email protected]
