Guam - Traffic came to a crawl in Piti this morning after Guam Police and Fire were activated to respond to a serious car crash. A 1989 Kenworth tractor trailer operated by Angoco's touched metal with a 2007 Toyota Camry.
Guam Police Department Spokesperson Sergeant Mike Aguon said, "As a result the passengers of the Camry have been transported to Naval Hospital, and we have classified the crash as serious." The crash occurred right in the middle of rush hour traffic just after 7:30 am at the intersection of Marine Corps Drive and San Francisco Drive in Piti.
"Officials say that preliminary reports show that the truck driver was making a u-turn on Route 1, responding to Polaris Point to drop-a container off and that's when the accident happened," Aguon detailed.
No arrests or citations have been issued yet. "I won't be able to tell you who is at fault as we have to consider everything that is going on, because the truck was making a u-turn and the car was going straight we have to look at speed and how he was making the turn, was it clear at the time and are there any witnesses that have seen it," Aguon said.
Along with GPD's Highway Patrol responding, the Port Police were activated and helped divert traffic, while Rev & Tax's Motor Carrier Section also was on scene. "They are conducting an investigation on the vehicle itself to do a thorough safety inspection. Anytime tractor trailer involved in an accident they will come out and inspect and make sure its running and all maintenance logs are up," Aguon said.
The driver of the truck was not injured, and declined an interview. The two inside the Camry are listed in stable condition at Naval Hospital after suffering serious injuries from the crash. "We are going to give them time to recover before we interview them as to what happened," Aguon said.
