DOD: strategy before budget
Department of Defense Deputy Ashton Carter said DOD is placing strategy before the budget in facing present and anticipated threats.
Guam - As the Fiscal Year 2013 National Defense Authorization Act makes its way through Congress, Department of Defense Deputy Ashton Carter said DOD is placing strategy before the budget in facing present and anticipated threats. Carter was addressing the American Enterprise Institute today discussing DOD's budget priorities for the 21st Century.
Carter focused on DOD's strategy which includes strengthening the military's might in the Asia Pacific Region. "We have a new rotational presence in Australia that we're building. Marine presence in Guam - definitely going to make that move now. And so Marine Corps presence in the Asia-Pacific region increasing also," he said.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is actually traveling through the region. He's embarked on a ten-day trip to Asia to meet with defense counterparts.
