LaHood to give commencement address
by Mindy Aguon
Guam - After Sunday's spring graduation exercises, the University of Guam will have graduated 14,000 people in its 60 years. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood accepted an invitation from UOG president Dr. Robert Underwood to give the commencement address.
Underwood has known LaHood for more than 20 years and it will mark the first time in Guam's history that a cabinet secretary has delivered the commencement address. LaHood is a Republican in the Obama Administration, and Underwood said, "He's kind of well known for his bipartisan approach and his belief in public service. He's very committed to the whole notion of public service, so I'm hoping that he'll say a few things like that to the students and give them a little inspiration."
Underwood is hopeful that LaHood may also provide some ideas on how Guam can improve its transportation system. The university president believes the secretary's visit will pay dividends for the island.
The graduation ceremony will be held on Sunday afternoon at the Field House.
