Guam - The Department of Corrections has a few pending matters to tend to before the books on a 21-year-old consent decree case with the U.S. Department of Justice can be closed for good. During a status hearing on Tuesday, the court was appraised of the progress being made with regard to the Adult Correctional Facility, environmental sanitation and medical and dental issues.
DepCor is currently in the process of installing a generator at the Hagatna Detention Facility and installing an electronic locking and unlocking system for the cells. Policies for medical issues are still under review but the department has hired a nurse.
District Court Chief Judge Frances Tydingco Gatewood commended the parties for their progress on the settlement agreement and ordered that they meet every two weeks to address the outstanding issues and status reports are due to the court by October 30. Another status hearing is set for November 20.
