The National Weather Service reports that Tropical Storm Goni is approaching the Marianas. A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan. This means that damaging winds of 39mph or more are likely within 24 hours. A Typhoon Watch also remains in effect for Tinian and Saipan. As of 2:00pm Goni was located about 150 miles east of Guam. The tropical storm is packing maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and moving west-northwest at 12 mph. Goni is expected to make its closest point of approach to Guam between 9:00am and 10:00am Sunday. But the NWS warns that winds and rain could continue and possibly strengthen after the closest point of approach for several hours. This is called a monsoon tail. If it occurs. Meanwhile a Flash Flood Watch has been issued. Tropical Storm Goni could produce between 8 to 12 inches of rainfall on Guam and Rota through Monday. Roads in poor drainage areas could become impassable. Houses in low-lying areas and close to streams and rivers could start taking on water. Guam remains in Condition of Readiness (COR) 3.
