Guam - The Department of Education has confirmed an investigation has been launched into allegations that a teacher may be inappropriately involved with a student - and it's not the first time such allegations have been made involving other teachers from the same school.
DOE deputy superintendent Rob Malay confirms he received a report from acting John F. Kennedy High School principal Dr. Barbara Adamos about allegations that a teacher was having an inappropriate relationship with a student. "I just want to protect the integrity of the investigation as it goes on," Malay said. He said staffers from folks DOE's Central Office are doing the investigation, adding, "and what we always say is 'we want students to be safe.'"
KUAM News has learned the teacher in question was detailed to the Central Office in Hagatna until the investigation is completed. We've also learned this isn't the first time a teacher at JFK High has been accused of acting inappropriately. DOE management declined to discuss details or even identify the teacher that's being accused, however officials confirm that there is an ongoing internal investigation and possibly a criminal investigation into allegations that teachers are having sex with students.
DOE officials confirm two other teachers resigned before the end of last school year in the midst of an investigation into allegations they were having an affair with students. Allegations like these have DOE asking parents and students to inform proper authorities. Malay said, "Please bring it forward to the school administrators and if you are not comfortable with that bring it forward to myself, bring it forward to the superintendent, your child's safety is of concern and we want to make sure that's always on the forefront."
Malay adds there have been no other reports or allegations made at other schools.
