UOG completes review of student's drowning
Guam - The University of Guam has completed its internal review into the April drowning death of Alexander Miralles. The student was participating in a hike as part of his History of Guam class led by professor, Dr. Michael Bevacqua. A total of 57 individuals including non-UOG students participated in the hike to Anao Point in Yigo. Close to 30 people were interviewed.
The findings indicate that Dr. Bevacqua did warn students prior to and during the hike about the safety concerns in the area including the rough and dangerous waters. Despite these warnings, Miralles along with two or three other students climbed down a 10-15 foot cliff to the reef flat. According to the findings, Miralles walked across the reef flat to the ocean's edge. The report went on to state that,"It is uncertain as to whether he intentionally entered the water or was knocked off balance by a wave after reaching the water's edge, and was subsequently swept into the ocean.
Meanwhile, the internal investigation also revealed that Dr. Bevacqua did not follow the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences procedures regarding the submittal of waiver and variance forms prior to the hike. According to a media release disciplinary action was taken against the professor.
