HASC conducts NDAA markup

Guam - The House Armed Services Committee conducted a lengthy markup of the Fiscal Year 2013 National Defense Authorization Act today. The committee removed the requirement for tangible progress on the Futenma Replacement Facility before the military buildup on Guam can begin.
The markup also provides funding for north ramp funding Andersen Air Force Base, upgrading fuel pipes and funding for Guam Army National Guard projects.
Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo supported the removal as it will hopefully speed up the use of funds for construction projects. She urged her colleagues to support the buildup on Guam, saying, "The mark also continues this committee's commitment for the realignment of military forces in the Pacific, including the military buildup on Guam. As we pivot to the Asia-Pacific Region it is critical that we have a lay down plan that is resilient and sustainable and I believe we're moving in that direction."
On Wednesday, Governor Eddie Calvo wrote to the head of the HASC, asking chairman Buck McKeon to authorize the release of $33 million in funding for Guam projects promised in the Programmatic Agreement. The governor also requested for nearly $140 million for critical infrastructure projects to ensure that the island is prepared to accommodate and welcome the Marines to Guam.
