Guam - Following the Consolidated Commission on Utilities' resolution exploring nuclear energy on Guam, the Guam Power Authority has engaged in informative meetings with a few interested companies to see if they meet the major criteria as outlined by the CCU. GPA spokesperson Art Perez told KUAM News, "It's an important first step that we include it as an alternative source...we certainly want something that will be suitable for Guam and those four guidelines within the policy will definitely be inputted to gather that kind of stakeholder feedback."

Although everything at this point is still speculative, the criteria outlined include safety concerns, strict Nuclear Regulatory Commission guidelines and procedures, economic feasibility and community acceptance. As we reported last month, the companies interested in nuclear energy included Global Energy Corp., Q-Power and Newscale.

GPA meanwhile is conducting an integrated resource plan to consider what impacts small modular nuclear reactors or similar advance nuclear technologies may have in reducing Guam's dependence on fossil fuel.
