Guam - NAVFAC Marianas small business advisor Al Sampson gave Tumon Rotarians an update on its contracts and issues involving the military buildup. Sampson saying that despite the delay, NAVFAC has still been awarding contracts and other projects are ongoing.

He said, "We spend so much every year just to maintain what we have at both bases at Andersen and Big Navy and when we go out aside from the buildup, we still have to paint the buildings, prepare sidewalks, build certain structures. So regardless whether the buildup is happening or not, we still do a lot of work at Navy."

Sampson says well over $400 million has been invested in construction and services contracts. Currently the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act prohibits any U.S. or Government of Japan-funding to be used for the Marines' relocation from Okinawa to Guam until several conditions are met.
