Guam - A couple of residents in Santa Rita are fed up with the road conditions along Routes 5 and 17 near Naval Magazine and Apra Heights. Resident's Julia Chargualaf Miller and George Harris are neighbors who have lived in the village for years. The pair hopes concerns from potholes to a lack of lighting are addressed, as they feel the area is prone to car crashes.
"My issues are safety issues; this road doesn't even have any safety reflectors, they sort of have but it's not reflecting anymore, there are absolutely no lights, except where the Navy intersection are and the patches, the good part of the road is also in Navy properties," said Miller. Harris added, "It's so in disrepair that sooner or later its going to claim a life or lives and I like to speak on behalf of the people who utilize this road."
Department of Public Works deputy director Carl Dominguez says they are aware of the really old road that needs to be rebuilt. He says DPW suggested a 50/50 cost share with the navy last year, but got no response. Dominguez admits due to a lack of funding there is no short term plan to fix the road - meaning no plans for at least the next four years.
