Guam - It's another groundbreaking for the Department of Public Works, as dirt was turned over for the Route 11 Improvement Project today at Cabras Island that aims to strengthen the existing asphalt concrete pavement throughout a 1.8-mile stretch along Route 11 from Route 1 to Industrial Avenue at Apra Harbor. DPW director Joanne Brown says this is one of the agency's major projects moving forward.

She said, "Certainly there's very little that comes into Guam that doesn't go through this port, and in the time we've been here this morning, we notice the amount of traffic that passing us by. So there's no doubt that upgrading and improving this road is going to have a tremendous impact to the future of our ability to transport the goods and service that we receive form our Port Authority of Guam."

The project will also include a truck-weighing station for vehicles transferring out of the Port to minimize the impact on Guam's other road projects. The project will cost approximately $17 million jointly funded by Federal Highway Administration and the Department of Defense and is expected to be complete by March of next year.
