We Are Guahan launches “Not One More Acre”
by Nick Delgado
Guam - We Are Guahan has launched a new effort to encourage more public participation in the upcoming scoping meetings for the Navy's Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement process. The Not One More Acre initiative is based on the fact that the department of defense currently controls almost 36,000 acres or more than a quarter of the entire island.
We Are Guahan member Cara Flores-Mays says that every single option the military has looked at for a firing range complex requires the acquisition of more land. The organization launched NotOneMoreAcre.com - a website that has been dedicated to information related to the SEIS including maps of the five alternatives at Pagat and Fena that are currently under consideration.
We Are Guahan is encouraging residents to sign a petition opposing the acquisition of any additional land on Guam. Flores-Mays says the Department of Defense's current footprint is bigger than Umatac, Merizo, Inarajan and Talofofo combined and the DOD doesn't need any more land.
