Guam - It appears a member or members of the Guam Kayak and Canoe Federation may have tested positive for illegal substances during the recent 14TH Pacific Games held in New Caledonia. According to an email obtained by KUAM News to the GKCF the Pacific Games Council conducted the tests which "revealed illegal substances." The email was written by the organization's President Joe John Mantanona, "There has been controlled interviews with the subject athletes(s) and coach. The people involved have admitted to the use of the substance(s)," the letter stated.
Mantanona's email did not specify what sort of illegal substance was detected. Mantanona however wrote that there will now be sanctions imposed on the team, "At the very least, I predict that the guilty athlete (s) will be banned from any National sport for a period of at least 3 years and our entire mens team will be disqualified from all the events they participated in, with further possibility of annulment," he wrote in his email to the board.
Mantanona could not be reached for comment this morning.
According to the Pacific Games Council website 2,700 athletes participated in the recent games from 22 Pacific Island nations and territories.
