Guam - The Guam Preservation Trust is being recognized for its commitment to protecting historic and cultural sites on Guam. The National Trust for Historic Preservation gives out a prestigious set of preservation awards and will present the Guam Preservation Trust the Trustees Award for Organizational Excellence during a ceremony in New York next week.

Over the last two decades, the Guam Preservation Trust has restored Fort Soledad and San Dionisio Church, as well as rehabilitated historic homes around the island, investing more than $20,000,000 to protect the island's heritage. They were also recognized for challenging the military's plans to develop a firing range at the ancient village of Pagat.

"While each is unique, this year's outstanding award winners all reflect the importance of protecting what is special and irreplaceable," said Stephanie Meeks, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. "The dedication of Guam Preservation Trust to keep the island's 4,000-year history alive is remarkable-even challenging the U.S. military. Their efforts are building a new sense of pride in the island's rich heritage."

The Trustees Award for Organizational Excellence is one of 23 awards that will be recognized during next week's 2011 National Preservation Conference.
