DOD conducting EIS for divert activities
Guam - The military is looking at the possibility of constructing a new a 10,000-foot runway required for additional aircraft training exercises and should the need arise for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations for Northeast Asia. As a result the air force is conducting an environmental impact statement.
Aside from a runway, also proposed are a cargo pad, new taxiways, and a 6,000-foot maintenance facility. Possible alternatives for the project include the international airports in the CNMI or the Guam Airport, which is already an existing location which would be considered as part of the no action alternative.
To learn more about the proposed EIS two public scoping meetings are being held this week. The first one is scheduled for this Thursday at the Barrigada Mayor's Office, while the next one is scheduled for Friday at the Dededo Mayor's Office. Both meetings are from 5:30 to 8:30 at night. Comments on the EIS will be accepted until November 10.
