Guam - Convicted of unlawfully possessing an endangered species, Adrian A. Mendiola was sentenced to 90 days behind bars and six months supervised release. In 2008 two of three maternity fruit bat colonies in Rota had been poached prompting federal authorities to execute a search warrant at Mendiola's residence.

They found four frozen fanihi (fruit bat) in his freezer. U.S. Attorney Alicia Limtiaco says the case serves as a reminder that those who violate the endangered species act will be prosecuted and held accountable.

Mendiola must also perform 100 hours of community service.
