Guam - Recent public law recognizes the superintendent of education as a member of the cabinet. Bill 318, introduced by Senator Aline Yamashita, takes that law one step further, giving the governor the authority to appoint a superintendent of education with confirmation by the Legislature. The legislation would remove this authority that is currently vested with the Guam Board of Education.
DOE has been without a permanent superintendent since July when Nerissa Bretania Underwood's contract expired. Last week two candidates in the running for the position failed to garner enough support from the board to be hired.
