Guam - For the first time in several years, the Commission on Decolonization will hold an official meeting. According to Executive Director Ed Alvarez the purpose of restarting the commission is to take Guam, which is one of 16 island nations, off of the decolonization listing at the United Nations. He adds the topic of decolonization should be included in the centerpiece discussion of the important issues affecting Guam.

He said, "I think establishing our ground rules with our relationship with the United States is first and foremost, it should be given the same premise of health, education and public safety. My job is to raise the level of awareness to get the message out how important this is and what is sets for our future."

The meeting will have board members sign letters addressed to the President of the United States, Secretary General of the United Nations, and heads of the U.S. Government reminding them of Guam's quest for decolonization and self-determination. The meeting takes place on Friday September 23 at nine in the morning at the Governor's Conference Room.
