Guam - The Department of Corrections was forced to step up its shakedown efforts at the Mangilao prison after several contraband items including cells phones were found in the facility's Maximum Security Unit. DepCor Spokesperson Lt. Antone Aguon says officers found five cell phones and bags of chewing tobacco last week in the unit's common area.

He says DepCor is still looking into how the inmates got a hold of these contraband items, saying, "There could be many ways, other inmates, and things being thrown over the fence and items maybe certain things not being checked as thoroughly as it should be as it enters the unit, right now we are not sure how long some of those things have been there."

He adds all activity at Post 6 other than attorney visits have ceased. All of the items were confiscated, and DepCor is investigating whether proper procedures were followed.
