Guam - It seems the Department of Corrections has ceased all plans to construct a new prison facility for the island. Agency Director Jose San Agustin says there is just no funding currently available to build and operate a new prison. He says his main priority is to improve the existing facility.
San Agustin however says the island will need a new prison because he says it's unrealistic to operate in the current facility ten years from now. "Definitely we do need it but speaking realistically that's probably years ahead if ever, it would be nice, we need it there's no doubt that we need," he explained.
The previous DepCor director began new prison discussion with three interested bidders. The new facility was estimated to cost $37 million.
