Guam - The boxes have been decorated and the toys and non-perishable food items were all loaded this past weekend in preparation of this year's Operation Christmas Drop. The vice president of the event Daniel Uchtmann says their efforts have been made a reality through the help of local businesses and organizations.

He told KUAM News, "We've been collecting donations from around the community, we've currently got boxes and the Sheraton Laguna Resort, Kmart, MDA along with the BX and NEX...we actually had the Tokyo Rotary Club along with the local rotary club, the Chamber of Commerce and a few other organizations that have helped made Operation Christmas Drop 2010 shaping up to be the best drop we have to date."

One by one the service members, their dependants along with other volunteers in the operation loaded cans of spam, bags of rice, lunch boxes and toys that were all donated. And for deputy air field manager Tanneka Chew told KUAM News it was all about ensuring that others have a happy holiday. "It means a lot we have so many less fortunate individuals that s not able to experience the experience that we are able to experience," she said.

And air freight terminal officer in charge Francine Kwarteng added, "I think it's just an eye-opener where they can be like hey there's more to life than just this, so I think these things are really good and they look forward to it every year, so I'm excited and that this goes well and all the boxes land properly and nobody gets hurt."

The U.S. Air Force will begin dropping the gifts from December 13-17 to about 57 different islands.
