Inmates' work suspension hampers mayors

Guam - Village mayors are feeling the impact of inmates no longer being allowed to participate on work details. The Attorney General's Office ordered the Department of Corrections to cease the work detail program after a convicted murderer was allowed to work at DepCor's headquarters.
Barrigada Mayor Jessie Palican, "For our maintenance it cost $20,000 an average annual to hire our maintenance, we only five maintenance in our village so by giving us the three additional for this giving back to the community work program that DOC provides for all the mayors and all the other agencies, it has saved for me in terms of our office and maintaining our village about $60,000."
The AG's Office has now ordered DepCor to review the list of inmates on work detail to reassess if they are, in fact, eligible for the program.
