Guam - Residents living along Ma'o Drive were evacuated this afternoon due to a huge grass fire that swept through the village of Agat this morning. Guam Fire Department Spokesperson Joey San Nicolas says firefighters responded to the blaze around 11:30 this morning.
GFD received assistance from the Navy's HSC-25 helicopter unit, who provided water support from the air. As of 4 this afternoon, the grass fire was starting to die down.
The National Weather Service had previously issued a Special Weather Statement for Guam, warning the fire danger for the island will become severe during the next few weeks as a result of drought conditions. The NWS also reported that gusty winds at times during the afternoon hours could require issuance of red flag warnings for Guam, which indicate an extreme potential for fires to spread rapidly.
