Young people trained to handle crisis calls
by Mindy Aguon
Guam - A three-day workshop continued today to help develop the Department of Mental Health's Youth Crisis Helpline. 30 volunteers aged 15 to 24 are being trained on how to respond effectively to crisis calls. Elizabeth Makulec, Executive Director of the St. Louis-based Kids Under Twenty One (KUTO), is on-island to conduct the training.
She told KUAM News, "Kids talk to each other a whole lot more than they talk to the adults in their lives so giving them some skills to be better prepared to help young people cope and talk through some of the problems they may be experiencing may be helpful and very beneficial."
KUTO is a nationally-accredited organization that specializes in suicide and crisis intervention.
