Ethics Committee authorizes Rector investigation

The Legislature's Ethics Committee finalized a resolution that would authorize its legal counsel, Attorney Anthony Camacho, to move forward with the investigation and full hearing on the complaint filed against Senator Matt Rector by Port Authority of Guam board chairman Monte Mesa.

Guam - The Legislature's Ethics Committee finalized a resolution that would authorize its legal counsel, Attorney Anthony Camacho, to move forward with the investigation and full hearing on the complaint filed against Senator Matt Rector by Port Authority of Guam board chairman Monte Mesa. 

The panel will review whether funds from Rector's legislative budget have been spent on Guam Federation of Teachers activities, whether the senator is prohibited from negotiating matters related to pay scales for Port employees, whether Rector is allowed to engage in activities with government agencies that involve the union, and if he is prohibited from using his legislative budget to pay rent to the union while simultaneously serving as union president.

Ethics Committee chairperson Senator Judi Guthertz, "This is part of the process we follow here at the Legislature. The Committee on Ethics and Standards agreed that we would prepare a resolution, which would authorize our attorney to proceed with the first hearing."

The first hearing will be held on January 14, then again on January 27 to discuss the Mesa complaint. The committee will also meet on January 15 to hear the preliminary findings from the complaint filed by Eloy Hara. All hearing begin at 9:30am in the Guam Legislature's Public Hearing Room.
