Cunningham visits to Guam public schools
GUAM - Assistant Secretary for Communications and Outreach at the U.S. Department of Education Peter Cunningham toured several local schools today to see first hand the challenges that face the local Department of Education. During a press conference today he noted concerns about the infrastructure at local campuses that he said is not unique to Guam but was fairly extreme. Cunningham also said he was surprised with the big blend of cultures at the schools.
He hopes to use this experience to help shape policy and ensure that island communities are given equal opportunities for funding.
According to Cunningham, "A lot of the ideas we have for how to fix schools are more applicable in urban areas than they are out here so this was a learning experience for me. You can't turn around a school in the same way in a rural area as you can in an urban area."
