Fundraiser planned to aide Samoa, Philippines
Federal aid has been dispatched to American Samoa, which was left devastated by a tsunami that killed dozens and displaced hundreds. Consolidated Commission on Utilities chairman Simon Sanchez has family in Samoa and says his mother's village was hit especially hard by the tsunami.
Federal aid has been dispatched to American Samoa, which was left devastated by a tsunami that killed dozens and displaced hundreds. Consolidated Commission on Utilities chairman Simon Sanchez has family in Samoa and says his mother's village was hit especially hard by the tsunami.
"Like everyone in the Pacific we reach out and try and help each other. We just ask for prayers for those that have suffered and the recovery effort," Sanchez told KUAM News.
A group that attended the Festival of Pacific Arts in Samoa last year is launching a fundraising relief effort. Organizer Monica Guzman told KUAM News, "We're still very cognizant of our situation with [Typhoon] Melor on its way over here, so probably early next week we'll get a meeting together. And just get organized.
"We need to make sure that we are safe also because in order to help others we need to make sure we're okay."
