Melor upgraded to typhoon

Melor has been upgraded to a Typhoon, according to the latest update from the National Weather Service.  A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for Guam, while a Typhoon Watch is in effect for Rota, Tinian and Saipan.

Melor has been upgraded to a Typhoon, according to the latest update from the National Weather Service.  A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for Guam, while a Typhoon Watch is in effect for Rota, Tinian and Saipan.

According to Guam Homeland Security the island remains in Condition of Readiness Four meaning that damaging winds of 39-57 miles per hour can be expected within 72 hours. Typhoon Melor is drifting northwest at four miles per hour. Maximum sustained winds are 75 miles per hour.

The public is urged to call the Homeland Security and Office of Civil Defense at 475-9600/2 or visit GuamHS.org for information on Typhoon Melor.  All residents should refrain from placing non-emergency calls relative to this storm to 911 to prevent unnecessary use of these critical lines.

Meanwhile residents are urged to continue to prepare for the storm.
