A staple in Guam's private educational system will be under new leadership soon as a religious order will take over the administration of the Father Duenas Memorial School. FDMS was founded in September 1948 by Bishop Apolinaris William Baumgartner with the help of the Stigmatine Fathers of Boston, Massachusetts.

Since then various Catholic orders have run the school until 1992 when William Roth, then assistant principal of Norte Dame High School, was asked to administer the Mangilao school. According to Guam Superintendent of Catholic Schools Cynthia Agbulos, the Catholic School System has always preferred that a religious order run FD, but only now has the opportunity arisen.

Hence, by July FD will be run by the Salesian Fathers from Manila. The Salesians are a religious order of the Catholic Church who were founded by St. John Bosco. They are now a worldwide organization and the second largest Catholic religious order in the world. The Salesian Order is known for educating the youth through a method popularly called the "preventive system". A system known for choosing positive reinforcement or encouragement over punishment.

Don Bosco believed that one should attempt to avoid punishment as much as possible by gaining love before inspiring fear. The founding father of the Salesians intended for the order to focus on being a friend to children everywhere including children who were poor, abandoned and at risk.

The Salesians have more bishops than any other order and even have a member who has been appointed as the Vatican's secretary of state in Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone of Genoa.

FD alumni Richard Untalan told KUAM News, "The Salesians are a reknowned order, and Guam and FD are fortunate and blessed." FD will be in a transition mode under Roth until his contract runs out at the end of the school year.
