Today the House of Representatives, by a 264-to-158 vote, approved the delay of the mandatory digital television transition until June 12. Though the approval is awaiting President Barack Obama's signature, KUAM is one of many stations across the country planning to proceed with plans to make the switch to digital on February 17.

First, the community asked us what DTV was and what difference will it make. The switch to digital television broadcasting was originally designed to free up bandwidth for cellular and public services, but aside from that, it will also improve the quality of pictures and programming that you get on your TV's at home.

This is how you can tell if you are ready for digital TV: come February 17, if you have cable service, a TV with a digital tuner or if you purchase a DTV converter box, you'll be ready for the transition. If you're receiving free TV programming at home using rabbit ears or a rooftop antenna with an analog television set, you'll need to purchase a TV converter box to keep up with the times.

One of the most asked questions was how to get a converter box. DTV converter boxes are available at local retailers like Kmart, AAFB Exchange for those of you in the military. You can also apply for the DTV Coupon Program - each household allowed up to two $40 coupons to purchase DTV converter boxes. Currently, there is a waitlist for individuals, but coupon applications are available on the World Wide Web, log on to DTV2009.gov, by phone at 1-888-DTV-2009. You can also pick up copies of applications to be mailed or faxed at the KUAM Studios in Harmon.

If you already have a converter box you won't need to hook them up until our DTV transition date on February 17, when the switch is made. Until then, they will not be of service.
