TwitterNeni, a free community service developed locally, is one of several Twitter clients you can use

The social network Twitter has literally taken the world by storm, giving you, me and everyone out there with an internet connection the ability to post updates from anywhere on practically any device. Guam's got access to the "statusphere" easier than ever before. And with your choice of several cool, free tools - one even developed locally â€“ you can get in on all the fun.

If you're already using Twitter on your personal or business computer and you can't keep tabs of your tweets and peeps because you don't have a data service plan with your cell phone provider, there's a solution out there for you: TwitterNeni. It's free and made right here on Guam!

"It's a completely free service," explained TwitterNeni co-founder Will Ymesei. "It's geared towards people that use Twitter because we saw that Twitter's a really good service that's not taking off here on Guam, and one of the problems is that there is no SMS support on Guam." That gap was filled with the creation of TwitterNeni. As long as you can send text messages, you can tweet and it doesn't matter which cell phone provider you signed up with, TwitterNeni covers it all.

To get started, just check out Twitterneni.com. KUAM News interactive media manager/news anchor Jason Salas, who also co-founded the community-focused project, said, "You go to the web site and plug-in your Twitter username, so we don't even see your password. It's completely secure."

The duo built a gateway that interfaces the Twitter API with the Gabriel Technologies, Inc., a local SMS solutions provider. "They've been an invaluable partner in helping get this very worthwhile service out to the people," said Salas.

After you register with TwitterNeni, you'll receive a text message that you must reply to in order to activate your account. Save the number in your contact list and begin sending your tweets via SMS. Right now TwitterNeni will only allow you to post and receive posts from those in your timeline, but in as little as two months, the development team will offer users the ability to post, reply and view replies to your posts. If you have a data service plan with your cell phone provider, there are a few free programs you can use to keep up with the Twitter scene. There's TwitterBerry, which allows you to tweet, follow your friends and receive updates on the go. There's also TinyTwitter, which offers the same services as TwitterBerry, which has a neat user interface like TwitterBerry, but doesn't allow you to view replies of your tweets. Then there's UberTwitter, which is practically the same as TwitterBerry, but UberTwitter allows you to add pictures and notifies you when you have Twitter updates.
