PBS Guam and KPRG-FM awarded over $687,000 to sustain local programming
PBS Guam and Guam Educational Radio Foundation, or KPRG-FM, – have been awarded major national funding aimed at helping public broadcasters navigate unprecedented financial challenges.
Both stations received support through the Public Media Bridge Grant, a nationwide initiative designed to assist stations facing the loss of corporation for public broadcasting funding.
The one-time infusion of funding is intended to help stations maintain essential public media services, strengthen operational sustainability, and continue offering free educational and cultural programming.
PBS Guam was awarded just over $538,000, while KPRG-FM received nearly $150,000.
In a joint statement, PBS Guam general manager Ina Carillo and KPRG-FM executive director Christopher Hartig said, [we] remain committed to serving the people of Guam with free, high-quality programming that informs, educates, and inspires."
Carillo then emphasized the ongoing financial strain in her own statement, noting, “This one-time grant doesn’t fix our structural funding crisis. It simply buys us time. We still need a permanent, reliable funding source to ensure Guam’s only public media stations can survive long-term."
Nevertheless, the award underscores the continued importance of trusted, local public media for the people of Guam and the Marianas.
