Replacement light fixtures & power poles being raised at GFA facility
Today's a big day for our island's soccer community as 80-foot light poles are being erected throughout the Guam Football Association's National Training Center in Harmon. In all, $1.9 million worth of poles with high-powered LEDs are replacements for those that were blown down from their pedestals two-and-a-half years ago during Typhoon Mawar. They'll be energized and illuminate all five fields.
Cheri Stewart, executive director for the GFA, told KUAM News, "All nine poles are going up; we're also having 14 fixtures going up on the futsal courts. So the big thing is that it's a nine-floodlight system at this time. These nine poles will cover the two artificial pitches, and also cover the beach court and the grass court as well as the mini-pitch. And then the 14 floodlights on the two futsal courts and then it'll be great to have the evening sports back online."
GFA leadership anticipates all poles to be raised by the end of the week, and excitedly expects night matches to resume in early spring. The facility on Saturday afternoon is also hosting the boys high school championship match this weekend with the Notre Dame Royals and JFK Islanders.
