America is gearing up to celebrate its 250th birthday. Here in Guam, the Stars and Stripes are already on the move, with a special stop at George Washington High School. And local students are honoring the nation’s milestone and what it means for the island.

Years of America’s independence are celebrated on-campus in Mangilao, Where America’s Day Begins. At GW, the Gecko community and island leaders gathered in full force to celebrate in a very special way. Students had the honor of flying a special American flag that’s on a global journey across 50 states, the United States territories, and 26 US cemeteries in 10 countries.

Rayn Rios, GW's SBA vice president, said, "Today, that same flag has reached Guam. What an incredible honor it is for our school, the oldest high school on island and proudly named after our nation’s president, George Washington, to be part of this historic moment."

Called Flag Sojourn 250, the nationwide campaign leads up to America’s 250th anniversary since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  Guam’s stop marks an important chapter in that story.

"We are the first US territory to fly this flag," shared Guam governor Lou Leon Guerrero. "We are gathered to welcome this traveling flag that has crossed oceans and continents as the US prepares to celebrate 250 years in 2026. Today, it becomes our story and your story as part of Guam’s story."

At the ceremony, students stood side-by-side, pledging their allegiance, performing cultural songs, and reflecting on what the flag represents. "Our sons and daughters have worn the uniform, defended freedom and protected the values that this flag represents. When we stand before it, we remember not only our history. Lets reflect on the challenges and struggles we face as a US territory. And we must continue to fight to make sure we too have our self determination," the governor continued.

The flag’s visit to Guam is just one stop on its journey into 2026. But for these students, its a moment they won’t forget. Assistant principal Joni Serisola said, "It's visit to our island reminds us that America’s story is also our story - one of courage, strength and the belief that together, we can overcome anything. As this flag continues its journey across all 50 states and territories, may it carry with it the heartbeat of Guam."
