Fire Prevention Week may be over — but the flames of friendly competition are still burning at the Guam Fire Department. Crews from GFD stations islandwide put their creativity to the test in an Instagram reel contest—all to promote this year’s fire safety theme and spark some morale along the way.

A friendly — and fiery — competition inside GFD, all in the name of morale and prevention. Assistant Fire Chief Edward Artero with the Fire Prevention Bureau explained, saying, "We had a contest to all the stations to create an Instagram reel no longer than 45 seconds picturing their station theme shirts, any activities they are doing at the station, and of course implementing this year's fire prevention theme."

And everyone showed up.

"The contest was based on the most likes, shares, comments, re-shares and based on total interactions that the app tracks," he added.

After some hot competition — the winners were announced:

- 1st place: Rescue Base 1
- 2nd place: Piti Fire Station
- 3rd place: Tamuning Fire Station

But the biggest win? — community awareness. Artero said, "Creating that awareness, and just getting people out in the community that lithium ion batteries are everywhere but to know what kind of device you have. For the most part they are smart devices but you need to know your device you dont want to be charging a device that is faulty and charging overnight especially while you are sleeping."

Artero also thanked partners who helped ignite the success of Fire Prevention Week — including a billboard painting contest judged by local vendors. And with the success of this friendly reel rivalry — they’re already cooking up what’s next.

"We've got to get more creative. We're going to find ways to help foster that team spirit, ultimately keep that morale going," he said.
