This morning over in Adelup, several gathered for the proclamation signing  to declare October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year's theme - Check Your Feel For Lumps, Save Your Bumps.

It is a time to gather to ignite hope, raise awareness,  and champion early detection for the women and families of Guam. Deputy director for Department of Public Health and Social Services Amanda Shelton said, "Breast cancer remains one of the most pressing challenges for our women on the island. According to the gum cancer registry from 2018 to 2021, 265 cases of invasive breast cancer were reported."

Shelton notes that each year we lose an average of 7 women to the disease. And what is most concerning is that 35% of these cases occur under the age of 55. "When one person is diagnosed, it affects the entire family and community. It is not just a medical issue, it is a community issue. It touches mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, and co-workers. When we all come together, we can create a stronger, safer awareness community," she added.

And next week from Oct. 20- Oct. 24, KUAM News presents our 5-part series 'Think Pink' and breeze 93.9fm shares hourly Think Pink tips, spreading awareness across our island.

It all leads up to Think Pink Day, Friday, October 24th, marking the 40th anniversary of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
