Fourth whooping cough case confirmed

The Department of Public Health and Social Services confirms a fourth case of pertussis, or whooping cough, for 2025. The latest case was reported on October 13, and contact tracing is underway to determine the source of exposure.
Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory infection that can cause severe coughing fits lasting weeks, followed by a high-pitched “whoop.” It can be especially dangerous for infants, leading to pneumonia, seizures, or breathing difficulties.
Health officials are urging the public to stay up to date with vaccinations — DTAP for children under seven and TDAP for older children, adults, and pregnant women.
Vaccines for eligible children are available through DPHSS community health centers in Dededo and Inalåhan. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 635-7412 or 828-7623.
