Shutdown hits, leaders reassure Guam

The federal government is now in a shutdown—and Guam’s leaders are urging calm while preparations are underway.
Governor Lou Leon Guerrero says essential services—like national defense and emergency response—will continue. She’s directed line agencies to have contingency plans ready to keep critical functions running.
Congressman James Moylan is sending the same message of reassurance, saying Social Security and M
edicare payments for manåmko’, veterans’ healthcare, disaster response, the postal service and military operations will continue uninterrupted.
But there will be delays for things like passports, student aid, housing loans, and some federal contract payments. Federal employees may be furloughed or asked to work without pay—though backpay is guaranteed.
Both the governor and the congressman stressed—Guam has weathered storms before, and we will get through this together.
