Terlaje renews push for GMH public-private partnership bill

Senator Therese Terlaje is calling on her colleagues to reconsider Bill 13, legislation that would create a public-private partnership for the island’s only public hospital.
Terlaje says the measure, which narrowly failed in May, is backed by healthcare experts and public servants who stress the urgent need for a new management model at GMH. She argues that without transparency, accountability, or outside expertise, the hospital risks falling deeper into crisis despite repeated infusions of cash.
In her letter, the senator points out that while an additional $40 million subsidy may provide temporary relief, it does not fix the longstanding structural issues threatening both patient care and the hospital’s financial viability.
Terlaje is urging lawmakers to act in bipartisan cooperation, saying a public-private partnership could provide the resources, networks, and accountability mechanisms necessary to improve gmh while insulating it from political interference.
