The Democratic Party of Guam is calling on republican leaders to publicly reject President Donald Trump’s latest comments downplaying intimate partner violence.

Speaking at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC on September 8, Trump suggested domestic violence incidents—like, “a little fight with the wife”—should not be counted in crime statistics. He claimed that if such “lesser things” were removed, crime would be nearly eliminated in the capital.

Democrats say those remarks are dangerous, sending a message that domestic violence is minor—rather than a serious crime that claims lives and damages families.

Party chair Mayor Anthony Chargualaf said as a father and husband, he believes it’s everyone’s duty to protect women and children—not make light of potential abuse. Vice chair Rikki Orsini added that when a president speaks, young and old listen—and no one should think domestic violence is a minor issue.

The democrats are urging Guam republicans to condemn the president’s remarks, reaffirm that domestic violence is a serious crime, and support policies that protect survivors.
