Lockdown at Merizo school triggered by gunfire scare

Merizo Martyrs’ Memorial School was placed on lockdown Friday morning after administrators reported hearing what sounded like gunshots coming from the nearby elderly housing and baseball field areas.
According to Guam Police Department Spokesperson Norman Analista, officers responded around 10 a.m. and began canvassing the area.
The situation prompted immediate precautionary measures, with students and staff sheltering in place until the source of the noise could be confirmed.
After a thorough check, police determined the sounds were not related to any criminal activity. Instead, they traced the gunfire to USDA personnel conducting firearms qualification training on a private ranch in the mountains—more than 300 yards away from the school and any nearby residences.
Once the scene was deemed safe, the lockdown was lifted and normal operations resumed at the campus.
Authorities emphasized there was no threat to the public, but the response underscores the sensitivity and seriousness with which schools and law enforcement treat any reports of gunfire near educational facilities.
