A woman accused of cashing a fraudulent check tied to a stolen vehicle is now facing multiple felony charges.

Police say 33-year-old Eava Rae Castro Mafnas deposited a $600 check in January that had been stolen from a man’s checkbook left inside a vehicle taken last December.

On Sunday, officers tracked down that stolen car and later found Mafnas, who claimed the vehicle was hers. When questioned, she admitted to writing and depositing the check, telling police she “really needed the money.”

Mafnas is charged with theft by deception, theft of property, and fraudulent use of a license plate–all third-degree felonies. If convicted, she could face up to nine years in prison. She's being held on $3,000 cash bail.
