Site dedication ceremony held for $32M Public Health laboratory

A new Guam Public Health Training and Laboratory site has been selected. A site dedication ceremony was held at the University of Guam campus in Mangilao on Tuesday morning.
Governor Lou Leon Guerrero spoke on what this means for the community’s access to better healthcare. She also took aim one again at lawmakers for shooting down her adminitration's original plans to have a medical complex at Eagles Field.
"One of our visions to have this Public Health laboratory right there in the middle of the medical complex so the hospital can take advantage of it," she detailed. "Behavioral Health can take advantage of it, the Veterans Clinic take advantage. But our legislature was shortsighted in their vision, very shortsighted. So we lost that great opportunity. But hey we didn’t just stop. Now we are going to build a hospital field in Mangilao right next to Eagles Field."
Governor Leon Guerrero also stated, "The establishment of this Public Health laboratory is a bio-safety 2/3 laboratory. I think that is such an amazing laboratory to have here in terms of the advancement of healthcare and the ability to get great results fast and quick so our providers can make decisions about the diagnosis of a patient."
The $32 million project was funded by a congressional appropriation to the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation.
The 16,000-square foot project is expected to be completed by June 2026.
