Former Governor Paul M. Calvo passes away at 90

Posted: Updated:

A pioneer of the private sector and of government has passed away, as our island is mourning the loss of former governor Paul M. Calvo. But the long list of accomplishments of the man pale in comparison to the limitless extent of his love for his island and for his family. Here's a look at the life of a legendary Guamanian.

An exceptional civic leader, business leader in one of Guam’s most successful locally-owned companies, a longtime public servant and devoted family man and man of faith, Paul McDonald Calvo passed away peacefully this morning. Calvo, the eldest of the Calvo brothers who led Calvo Enterprises, was born in 1934, the son of Eduardo Torres Calvo and Veronica McDonald Calvo.

Calvo was part of our greatest generation as a survivor of World War II. He would later attend military school in Texas and in 1958 earned a degree from Santa Clara University.

When his father passed away in 1963, Calvo and his brothers took the helm of his many substantial business holdings including Calvo’s Insurance, one of the largest and most successful locally owned insurance companies in Guam to this day. The many ventures under Calvo Enterprises include beverage and goods distribution, real estate, grocery, media and many more.

But Calvo’s visionary leadership went beyond the private sector, as he was also a passionate public servant. As a founding member of the Republican Party of Guam, he served three terms as Senator and served as governor of Guam from 1979 to 1983.

He was a selfless and compassionate leader whose contributions resonate throughout the community.

Perhaps the only thing that surpassed his love of home was his boundless love for his family. He was married to the former Rosa Baza and together they raised eight children who have carried on his legacy, with their involvement in politics, philanthropy, and their family business. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

His children lovingly remember the family's patriarch, writing, "We are blessed and proud of the legacy left behind by our father...in addition to being a former senator of the Guam Legislature, former Governor of Guam, Dad was past president and CEO of Calvo Enterprises Inc. and chairman of Calvo’s Insurance and Payless Markets Inc. Prior to his passing, dad was a proud Knight of Saint Sylvester and president emeritus of Calvo enterprise, Calvo’s insurance, Payless Markets, and PMC investments Inc. Most importantly, he was a stellar husband, father and grandfather!”

A man of faith and family. A leader in business and politics. Governor Paul M. Calvo was 90 years old.
