Guam Power Authority receives $3M to move forward on 100% renewable energy for the island

In partnership with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the Guam Power Authority was awarded $3 million by the Department of Interior Office of Insular Affairs to move forward with Phase II of the Guam 100.
Phase II of the Guam 100 initiative is structured to focus on delivering analysis and strategies to implement the renewable energy scenarios identified in Phase I.
Building on the stakeholder engagement and detailed modeling of Guam’s current power system, Phase II will involve a deep dive into the technical, economic, and policy foundation necessary for transitioning to 100% renewable energy.
“Phase II of the Guam 100 is pivotal in transforming our vision for a sustainable energy future into actionable strategies. This effort not only complements GPA’s Clean Energy Master Plan but also enables us to refine and enhance it with advanced technological insights and stakeholder input,” said GPA General Manager John Benavente.
Modeled after the Los Angeles 100 and Puerto Rico 100, this effort will evaluate pathways to 100% renewable energy through a process that includes responsive stakeholder engagement, data generation and gathering, renewable energy scenario development and evaluation, and impact modeling and analysis.
The overall goal is to identify affordable, technically sound, resilient, and equitable pathways to achieve 100% renewable power without compromising the integrity of the electric grid.
GPA remains committed to powering the island with 50% renewable energy by 2030 and 100% by 2040.
“We are thankful for the continued support of the Department of Interior Office of Insular Affairs and NREL. Together, we are laying the groundwork for a cleaner, more resilient Guam,” added Benavente.
