Firefighters from the Northern Marianas will be making their way to California this week to assist the state in responding to devastating wildfires.

The 29 firefighters on Saipan met with CNMI Gov. Arnold Palacios today for a briefing and blessing before they depart on Thursday and Friday.

CNMI Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services told KUAM News that they are likely to help respond to the park fire in northern California, which is the fourth largest wildfire in the state’s history.

The fire has destroyed 542 structures and has caused thousands of residents to flee their homes since it started on July 24.

Safe travels to all and our thoughts and prayers are with those impacted.
