Yona residents head to the polls in hotly-contested mayoral race

It’s Guam’s Primary Election Day, and the crowds slowly but surely turned-out in Yona. It's a highly-contested mayoral race as residents decide who they want to lead their village and island, casting their ballots here at M.U. Lujan Elementary School. Destiny Cruz spoke to some of those who are among the over 3,000 registered voters here today.
Yona resident Johnny San Nicolas is one out of 3,044 registered voters in his village–today, he proudly arrives at his polling site, standing by the saying, “Your vote is your voice.”
“Well, I want to be counted," he shared. It’s a desire shared by fellow Yona resident Joe Blas, who says wants to see action on the promises made by island leader hopefuls. “Of course, like they promise all the time—health, safety, and security for the island of Guam," he said.
San Nicolas chiming in to say he hopes his vote will help to fix these issues, noting, “Stray animals", and “the power and education.”
In the meantime, both San Nicolas and Blas had four mayoral candidates to choose from: incumbent Bill Quenga and Brian Terlaje on the democratic ticket and Franklin Hiton and Debbie Lujan on the republican side.
Blas spoke on what he’s ultimately looking for in a mayor, telling KUAM News, “Traditions, culture, community service, and, of course, being transparent.”
Only time will reveal who clinches a spot, as polling sites across the island close at 8pm.
