More than $823,000 in unclaimed, canceled and returned child support checks continue to sit in a bank account.

Efforts have been underway in recent months to find the custodial parents to get them the money for the children but multiple issues including errors with banking information have led to the money sitting for years.

Now, the Guam Attorney General’s Office is working with the legislature to find a solution to make the best use of the funding.

A public hearing was held today for Bill 240, which would ultimately authorize the AG’s office to use the undistributed funding.

Deputy AG with the Child Support Division Raymond Illagan said, “The undistributed fund issue was not created overnight. It was a culmination of these issues that were not properly and timely resolved. It has resulted in millions of dollars sitting in the Child Support Trust Fund.”

Several amendments were suggested during the hearing.

The AG’s office shared concern that taking over the funding could impact the amount of federal dollars it receives for the child support program.

The measure was introduced as tracking down the rightful owners of the payments has been a challenge.
